 UPCOMING AUGUST 2009 EVENTS:

Einstein’s Biggest Blunder?

Dark Energy and the Runaway Universe

PMO invites you to join Alex Filippenko, Professor of Astronomy at UC Berkeley, to discuss observations of very distant exploding stars. These observations show that the expansion of the Universe is now speeding up, rather than slowing down. “Dark energy” stretches the very fabric of space itself faster and faster with time, but the physical origin of dark energy is unknown, and is often considered to be the most important unsolved problem in physics.

When: Saturday, August 29 at 7:00 P.M., doors open at 6:30 P.M. (tours will begin on the mountain at 9:30 P.M.)

Where: The Riverhouse, 3075 N Highway 97, Bend OR, followed by tours at the observatory (see the Visiting tab for directions).

Cost: $15 per person, please call 541-346-3236 to make your reservation. Tickets will NOT be sold at the door.

Alex Filippenko received his Ph.D. in Astronomy from Caltech in 1984 and joined the UC Berkeley faculty in 1986. One of the world's most highly cited astronomers, he has coauthored about 570 scientific publications and is the recipient of numerous prizes for his research. He has won the top teaching awards at Berkeley, and students have voted him the "Best Professor" on campus six times.  In 2006, he was named the Carnegie/CASE National Professor of the Year among doctoral institutions. He has produced a 96-lecture astronomy video course with The Teaching Company and has coauthored an award-winning astronomy textbook..
